Usually When Things Have Gone This Far People Tend To Disappear

For Whom The Bell Tolls

"A catfight has broken out in America's southernmost town over the future of some of its famous citizens - dozens of six-clawed felines descended from a pet that belonged to Ernest Hemingway.

It is believed that 46 of the unusual cats roam the grounds of the author's former home, at Key West, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The US Department of Agriculture wants to fine the museum's owners up to $US200 a day for "exhibiting" the animals without a licence, according to a lawsuit filed in Miami. The trustees insist that tourists pay to see the house, of which the cats are merely residents.

"They're comparing the Hemingway house to a circus or a zoo because there are cats on the premises," said Cara Higgins, the museum's lawyer. "This is not a travelling circus. These cats have been here forever."

About half the cats are mitten cats, meaning they have extra claws on their front or back paws. Often named after actors, artists and philosophers, the popular feline residents include Archibald MacLeish, Pablo Picasso and Simone de Beauvoir.

Hemingway received a female cat called Snow White as a gift from a ship's captain in Key West in 1935, and its descendants have enjoyed free rein at the house since it opened as a museum in 1964, three years after the author committed suicide."

I Thought Of The Ways That I've Broke My Own Heart

Sometimes I don't like The Fiery Furnaces but when you jam a Motown riff in your song and touch it up with well written and depressing lyrics it always helps. This is one of the best songs I've heard all year.

Les Coups de Pied Francaises

The staff here actually made an effort to miss The French Kicks when they opened for The Futureheads. Having never heard their music before but having glanced at photos of them, we judgmentally wrote them off as a likely "Style Rock" band. Why? Cause some of the staff here are dicks.

So to our dismay when we arrived the French were still on stage with their instruments...playing them. And obviously since we're writing about them you've concluded that we had to eat our words.

Their new record Two Thousand which we just got is really good and it's all we've wanted to listen to in the office.

Cat Burglar

A pink-and-white gardening glove was missing Thursday morning from Jeannine Goche's front porch. But there was absolutely no mystery about who had taken it. Willy, the cat who loves gloves, had struck again.

"It has to be him," said Goche, an attorney. "I've heard about him."

Garbage Disposal With 4 Legs

"There’s certainly more truth than poetry in the expression “like father, like son.” And when it comes to excess weight and obesity in dogs and cats, it’s often “like owner, like pet.” ... One study found a strong correlation between excess weight in pet owners and in their pets. "

Manilow Mayhem

From The Associated Press..."Australians Upset Over Loud Manilow Music"

"It could be magic for some, but the use of loud Barry Manilow music to drive away late-night revelers from a suburban Sydney park is getting on the nerves of nearby residents.

The local council in Rockdale, in Sydney's southern suburbs, started a six-month trial of high-volume hits by Manilow and Doris Day to chase away car enthusiasts who were gathering on weekend nights at Cook Park Reserve.

"Barry's our secret weapon," Rockdale Deputy Mayor Bill Saravinovski told The Daily Telegraph newspaper, four weeks after the start of the effort. "It seems to be working."

But some people living near the park are less than enthralled. They say the barrage of "Copacabana,""Could It Be Magic" and "Que Sera Sera," blasting from 9 p.m. to midnight every Friday, Saturday and Sunday is driving them crazy.

"The initial reaction was that they found it irritating," Saravinovski said. "I'm not disputing what the residents are saying. I can't swallow some of the tracks like `Mandy.'

"We have tried to reduce the sound and we are reviewing the songs. I don't mind Barry Manilow, but I'm more of an ABBA and Celine Dion fan."

If You're Feeling Sinister

I've been listening to Three Mile Pilot's "The Chief Assassin to the Sinister" too much lately. The album came out way back in 1994 on Cargo and the songs are still epic and listened to while in a train during a thunderstorm. When their next record on Touch and Go comes out next year it will mark the end of a ten year drought.

Three Mile Pilot - Aqua-Magnetic - "Sharp is as the blade that it looks to be"
Three Mile Pilot - Circumcised - "I'll take what I deserve cause I gotta get out now"
Three Mile Pilot - Inner-Bishop - "Build your batallion. Set your distance"

First...Their Dignity. Now...Binkey The Cat. Next...Birthday Parties.

A beloved furry feline named Binkey is getting the boot today from a Chelsea veterans home where she has lived for nearly a decade after management’s decision to put the kibosh on allowing pets to roam among their residents.

“The cat shouldn’t have to suffer,” New resident Johanna Schaffer said. “She’s well taken care of by residents and made a big difference in a lot of lives.”

“Some residents living in this nursing facility may have no family members and it would be hard for them to let her go,” said Scotta Giacoppo, deputy director for Boston’ MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center.

“The area is not conducive to pets,” said DICK Powers, home spokesman. “Sure, everyone will miss the cat, but we are in the process of finding a loving home for her.”

It's You, Not Meow

The following is from a local newspaper's advice column, my answer follows the papers answer.

DEAR CAROLYN: I have recently become engaged to a wonderful guy and we are planning to move in together.``Joe'' has two cats that he is absolutely crazy about, and I knew were a non-negotiable item early on in the relationship. I've never had cats, never liked them, never wanted them, but I would never ask Joe to give them up. However, I have asked that we designate our bedroom a cat-free zone. The trouble is, Joe says most of the pleasure he derives from owning cats comes from having them sleep with him. I don't think it's fair that I be awakened several times nightly because I am being stepped on. I feel I am already making a compromise for Joe regarding the cats, and I don't think my request is all that unreasonable. Is it?

DEAR MEOW: Joe wants to sleep with his cats; you want to sleep. That suggests Joe is arguing for a luxury over your basic need, which would make Joe the unreasonable one. If reasonableness applied here. It doesn't. It's about priorities. If it's worth it to Joe to put you through hell so he can sleep with his cats, that's his call. If you'd rather be with Joe than feel rested and loved, that's your call. And if you move in hoping Joe will change his mind, then ``unreasonable'' would finally fit

You've made your bed now lay in it...with those two adorable cats.
