Mr. MR
Max Roach, a man I consider one of the greatest drummers of all time passed away today.
When I was a 17 year old I went to see him play at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, I was going thru a fierce bebop phase during that period.
At the end of his set I nevously went up to him to tell him how much the show had meant to me, he said thanks and he shook my hand.
I was hoping that by shaking his hand some of his drum genius would rub off on me...but unfortunately I proved too toxic and any hints of genius were destroyed by bad rhythm and stiff 4/4 timing.
Be sure to check out his work with Clifford Brown, some of my most favorite jazz records.
