House M.D

A little bit ago I got 3 new CD's, TV on the Radio, Yo La Tengo and The Beach House and the one I've listened to and loved the most so far has been Maryland’s The Beach House.

There are many bands these days that are mining that folky/psychedelic sound but The Beach House record is prettier and catchier than any I’ve heard in a long time.

My second favorite record of the year.

It’s out on Tuesday Oct 3rd on Carpark Records.
They tour the United States in November and dates are at their myspace site

The Beach HouseLovelier Girl (It was really difficult to pick one song to feature…)

I posted last week about them with some more links

Wong Cat-wai

By now you've already read that Cat Power article in the New York Times , the one with this to say about her past "her mornings began with a minibar’s worth of Jack Daniel’s, Glenlivet and Crown Royal."

I'm sure that wasn't too surprising to anyone but this certainly caught me off-guard

"She said that the cult director Wong Kar-wai invited her to play Jude Law’s ex-lover in the movie he is now shooting. Mr. Wong, she said, told her he was in the habit of playing “The Greatest” for his actors before each scene. "

The same Wong Kar-wai film staring Norah Jones called My Blueberry Nights... yes I'm rolling my eyes with you.

Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love is one of my favorite films of all time, it's just fucking beautiful.

There was a time a few years back where I had to listen to the soundtrack of the film every morning before I listened to any other music at work. I still have no idea why, i guess it turned into superstition of some sort but the weird disorder dragged on for about a year.

Cows come home immediately

It's so easy to make fun of this guy, you don't even have to do any work. "Sam's Town is it" boasts Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, talking about his band's eagerly awaited second album. "It's gonna be the one that keeps rock and roll afloat. And I can say that 'til the cows come home, and it can sound as cocky as you want."

Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stones disagrees strongly in his review of the record "Yet even a more deft singer couldn't save bloated epics with I-swear-I'm-not-making-this-up titles like "Bling (Confessions of a King)"..."On Sam's Town they seem like they're trying to make a big statement, except they have nothing to say"

It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola

Seriously WATCH this footage of Lola, the special and one of a kind cat who walks on her front paws with her whole body straight in the air. We are going to Denver to adopt her.

Slumberland Is Better Than You

There are not many labels that can boast about having consistently released fantastic music for over seventeen years...but Slumberland Records is one that can.

If Henrys Dress's Bust em Green or Rocketship's A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness had been released now those records would be hits, they rival anything released today. The fact that Slumberland released those records 10 years ago is a testament to the taste they've always had regardless of any trends.

They've just released two new singles and redesigned their website with loads of new goodies but most importantly added a Slumberland radio player which we've been loving all day.

Selected Favorite Tracks over the years:

HoneyBunch - Mine Your Own Business (June 1992)
Velocity Girl - I Don't Care If You Go (Feb 1993) - This version has Bridget Cross of Unrest on vocals
Hood - Love is Dead (Sept 1996)
Amy and Stewart - The Lights Are Out (May 2000)
The How - I Was A Boy (Sept 2006)

Taken By Trees

Victoria Bergsman, former vocalist for The Concretes has some demos from her new project called Taken By Trees. She could sing the Macarena song and I'd love it, her voice sounds that good to me.

My favorite tracks from the last Concretes record which is a highlight of 2006.

FACT: Willie Nelson will get you really high on the tour bus

Willie Nelson and several members of his band were issued misdemeanor citations for drug possession early today during a traffic stop in Saint Martin Parish, La.

Trooper Willie Williams says troopers smelled a strong odor of marijuana when the driver opened the bus door.

During a search of the bus, Williams say approximately 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana and approximately 2/10 of a pound of mushrooms were located on the bus.

Cats - Gateway drugs to the West

Saudi Arabia's religious police have issued a decree banning the sale of the cats and dogs as pets, seen as a sign of Western influence. The prohibition on dogs may be less of a surprise, since conservative Muslims despise dogs as unclean.

The inclusion of cats in the Saudi ban puzzled many, since there's no similar scorn for them as there is for dogs in Islamic tradition One of Prophet Muhammad's closest companions was given the name Abu Huraira, Arabic for "the father of the kitten," because he always carried a kitten around with him and took care of it. A number of hadiths — traditional stories of the prophet — show Muhammad encouraging people to treat cats well. Once, he let a cat drink from the water that he was going to use for his ablutions before prayers. Another time, Muhammad said a woman who kept a cat locked up without feeding it would go to Hell.

The religious police, known as the Muttawa, have the role of enforcing Saudi Arabia's strict Islamic code. Its members prowl streets and malls, ensuring unmarried men and women do not mix, confronting women they feel are not properly covered or urging men to go to prayers.

"One bad habit spreading among our youths is the acquisition of dogs and showing them off in the streets and malls," wrote Aleetha al-Jihani in a letter to Al-Madina newspaper. "There's no doubt that such a matter makes one shudder."

"Then what's the point of dragging a dog behind you?" he added. "This is blind emulation of the infidels."

Big Ups To Mr.Hagrid

Hagrid-of-Hogwarts has been named best household pet for 2006 by the American Cat Fanciers Association.

Mr.Hagrid was one of a litter of two-week-old kittens removed from Philadelphia's Veteran Stadium just before it was imploded in 2004.

He beat out 821 other cats who competed in 50 shows across America and Canada.

Judges liked Hagrid's glossy coat and his eager way of playing. He also drew attention with his thumb-like extra toe on each front paw, which he uses to scoop up toys.

Master And Everyone

The first concert I ever went to as a teen was The Jesus and Mary Chain and Opal, opening the show was Social Distortion... I'm not kidding. I'm pretty sure the version of Opal I saw that night was minus Kendra Smith but Hope Sandoval was her replacement. Sandoval and Opal songwriter David Roback would go on to form Mazzy Star a few years later.

The Beach House from Baltmore reminds me of Opal, a little lazy, a bit melancholy and often foggy... their song "Master of None" kills.

Their debut record is out in a month on Carpark Records.

I stumbled on this band while listening to Hanna Fahl's excellant weekly Swedish radio program P3 Pop, don't be a stranger.
